Hardwood Utilization Techniques for Northern California

This publication will be of interest to anyone concerned with the utilization and sustainable management of North Coast hardwoods. It is an effort to put under one cover some of the basic information needed to:

(1) assess the sustainable harvesting possibilities of hardwood stands, and

(2) maximize the yield of hardwood lumber through proper felling, bucking, milling and drying techniques.

This information has been assembled and developed over the last 13 years by Wild Iris Forest Products and the Institute for Sustainable Forestry (ISF).

Tanoak Utilization: Coordination of Tanoak Recovery and Yield Studies and Knowledge Transfer

University of California Forest Products Laboratory Woody Biomass Program conducted a tanoak lumber recovery study, funded by the US Forest Service, State and Private Forestry.  The study follows the process from the standing tree to the manufacture of surfaced, kiln-dry lumber. The goal is to develop reliable processing information that can be used to inform economic decisions.
